Ook in de Mayo Clinic in Amerika wordt gewerkt met RFA. zie informatie hieronder. Vooral ook valt op dat RFA gebruikt wordt voor pijnverlichting bij botkanker.

Radio-frequency ablation (RFA) is a new, FDA-approved, minimally invasive treatment for certain types of cancer. A thin needle is inserted through the skin and into a tumor using computed tomography (CT) or ultrasound guidance. Electrical energy delivered through this needle destroys the tumor by heating it enough to cause tumor cell death. The tumor is usually destroyed in 10 to 15 minutes. During RFA treatment, patients are under general anesthesia. (See Illustration of procedure.)

Mayo Clinic Experience with RFA
Mayo Clinic physicians have treated more than 250 patients with liver cancer, more than 50 patients with kidney cancer, and more than 40 patients with bone cancer pain using RFA. The RFA team at Mayo Clinic includes radiologists, who perform the treatment, and cancer specialists. This team determines the appropriateness of RFA tumor treatment for an individual patient.

Conditions Treated with RFA
Heather Henrichs still dances, thanks to radio-frequency ablation treatment. Read more of Heather's story.

With intent to cure:
Liver
Some types of cancer that have spread to the liver can be treated if the tumors are limited in size (less than 4 cm in diameter) and number (no more than 3). Cancer that originates in the liver can also be treated.

Kidney
Small cancers (usually no more than 3 cm in diameter) can be effectively destroyed by this method.

Lung
Cancers that are limited in size (less than 3 cm in diameter) and few in number (1 or 2) can be treated if they are separate from vital structures

With intent to control pain:
Bone
Cancer that has spread to the bones can be treated to control severe pain if the pain is limited to 1 or 2 sites. In Mayo Clinic experience, 77 percent of patients who have RFA to relieve bone cancer pain experience a 90 percent drop in pain during the follow-up period with 53 percent of people experiencing total pain relief within a few days.
Advantages of RFA
RFA is an alternative to surgery when:

surgery is not likely to be successful or has failed in the past
other medical conditions increase the risk for surgery
RFA is a minimally invasive procedure with no skin incision, minimal risk to the patient, and little or no pain after the procedure. After treatment, some patients spend a night in the hospital; some go home the same day. Also, this procedure can be repeated if new cancer appears.
