Uit onderzoek van kinderarts dr. Ellen van der Gaag blijkt dat wanneer kinderen tussen de 1 en 5 jaar die vaak ziek waren een dieet krijgen met extra veel groene groentes, volle zuivel en rundvlees dat hun weerstand - immuunsysteem stukken beter wordt en de kinderen ook beter bestand worden tegen ziek worden door virussen en bacteriën en luchtweginfecties.

Van der Gaag deed afgelopen jaren onderzoek bij kinderen in de hele regio Twente. Van alle kinderen die bij haar op de kinderpoli komen heeft 95 procent namelijk wel klachten, maar geen medisch aanwijsbare reden waarom ze blijven kwakkelen met hun gezondheid. Daarom is Van der Gaag gaan onderzoeken wat voor effect voeding kan hebben op deze kinderen. 

Volgens RTVoost hebben Italiaanse wetenschappers het dieet van dr. van der Gaag overgenomen in de preventie tegen het corona virus: 

"Italiaanse wetenschappers hebben het onderzoek van de Hengelose kinderarts inmiddels ook gevonden en delen het volop als pro-actieve manier om het coronavirus weerstand te bieden. Want hoe beter de afweer van kinderen is, hoe beter ze waarschijnlijk bestand zijn tegen het virus wanneer ze ziek worden." 

In het onderzoek van van der Gaag kregen ouders van kinderen tussen de een en vijf jaar een uitgebreide vragenlijst voorgelegd. Daaruit bleek dat  kinderen met klachten veel minder groene groentes en rundvlees aten dan hun leeftijdsgenootjes. En ook minder pure, onbewerkte producten en vetten binnen kregen, die van belang zijn voor het immuunsysteem. 

Zo’n 120 kinderen werden vervolgens verder onderzocht. De helft kreeg vaker broccoli, spruitjes en boerenkool voorgeschoteld, aten vaker een stoofpotje met rundvlees, smeerden roomboter op de boterham en dronken volle melk in plaats van halfvolle.

En zij constateerde dat de groep kinderen die overschakelden op een dieet met groene groentes (bv. broccoli, boerenkool, spruitjes, spinazie), roomboter gebruikten ipv margarine bv, volle melk dronken en meer rundvlees aten, gaandeweg veel minder vaak ziek werden.

Na een week of vier namen de klachten al af. „En in de maanden daarna werd het verschil alleen maar groter.” In het halve jaar dat het onderzoek duurde ging het gemiddelde van 14,5 zieke dagen per maand terug naar 4,8 dagen. Ook voelden de kinderen zich fitter en sliepen ze beter. Tegelijkertijd bleek er geen negatief effect te zijn op het lichaamsgewicht en het cholesterolgehalte.

Zes tips van de kinderarts voor een betere weerstand

1. Gebruik meer onbewerkte producten en minder sausjes uit pakjes en zakjes.

2. Bied kinderen het rundvlees aan in de vorm van een stoofschotel. Dat kost wel wat meer tijd. Maak de schotel daarom al de avond voor de dag van het gebruik.

3. Hou vol. Ouders die meededen aan het onderzoek bleken na een tijdje toch weer te vervallen in oude eetpatronen. Waardoor de klachten bij de kinderen terugkeerden.

4. Gebruik geen smeerbare roomboter in kuipjes, maar de blokken. Hoe goedkoper, hoe beter. Snij er steeds een stukje af en bewaar dat buiten de koelkast.

5. Sommige kinderen lusten niet zo graag volle melk. Zet ze dan volle yoghurt voor. Daar hebben ze vaak minder moeite mee.
